Retirement rumors have long followed Roger Federer. His agent explains how it might happen in the next few years.

Tony Godsick may not know Roger Federer’s retirement plans but he does have a pretty good idea of the tennis legend’s retirement timeline.

Godsick, who is also the agent for top players like Coco Gauff and Alexander Zverev, has said that even the 20-time Grand Slam does not know when he will permanently hang his tennis racket. In a phone interview with Tennis.com, Godsick confessed that he would appreciate knowing Federer’s target retirement window so he can plan ahead. But at this point, even the player himself is still not sure.

When pressed about Federer’s retirement plans, the professional agent echoed what Federer has been saying in the past few months. The Swiss Maestro will mainly be considering his family’s welfare and his health when deciding when to walk away from the tennis court.

That said Godsick did say that he does not think the world no. 3 is close to retiring yet. As someone who has represented Federer since 2005, that opinion gives fans a sound insight into the tennis legend’s retirement timeline.

Roger Federer’s rumored retirement

Ever since he reached the latter half of his 30s, retirement rumors have followed Federer everywhere.

Federer admits that getting older has presented a lot of challenges. For one, it takes him more time and effort now to recover from an explosive match. One good thing about him is that he does not feel the pressure to retire at the top of his game.

At the age of 38, Federer has an uphill battle to claim his 21st Grand Slam win. After all, no one of that age has won a Grand Slam in tennis history.

He also still has the other members of the Big Three, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, to battle for the Grand Slams. There is also a fresh batch of young players that include Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas determined to break the Big Three’s dominance.

Federer’s endorsements

If Federer decides to retire in the next two years, his massive endorsement deals will more than make up for his loss of tennis earnings.

Due to his success in the tennis court and his status as a universally beloved figure, Federer has inked numerous endorsement deals that will give him financial stability in the years to come. Among these contracts is a 2018 deal with Japanese brand Uniqlo, which will provide him $300 million until 2028.

Between June 2018 and June 2019, the Swiss Maestro is reported to have earned around $86 million from endorsements alone. That is $32 million more than the next athlete on the list, Tiger Woods.

His endorsement earnings also already overtook his tennis prize earnings in that same period. He only got a total of $7.4 million for his professional tennis matches.
