Robert Bautista Agut has been a regular alternate player in the ATP Finals for a while. However, this season, he went into the competitions as a first alternate, which is a significant improvement. In three years, he has been at this season-ending showpiece as a second alternate.
He has been training at the O2 Arena in London in readiness for the Davis Cup championship in Madrid. The 32-year-old will be part of the Spain team that will participate in this championship. Asked about the ATP and Davis Cups, this is what he said, “I would prefer them to be combined. The second one is the same event one month after. They should speak about the system and try to combine it or do it in a different way.”
A wedding in the offing for the Spaniard
The Spaniard is set to tie the knot with his longtime girlfriend Ana Bodi Tortosa, who was a beauty queen pageant star in Burriana, her hometown. The wedding is scheduled to take place on 30th November.
The two have been in a relationship ever since they were teenagers. But, Ana Bodi Tortosa has been keeping a low profile, unlike her better half. However, they have been seen traveling together off late.
Bautista on his season
Roberto Bautista is convinced that he had a great season. Speaking to the Spanish press while in London, he said, “I felt very comfortable on grass and most of all there. I also thought that next year, I would like to play some more tournaments on this surface.”
The Spaniard has been solid and consistent this year. He beat Andy Murray in the first round of the Australian Open. Besides, he came from two sets down to defeat Novak Djokovic. He also managed to force Djokovic int playing four sets during the Wimbledon semifinals.
Bautista Agut still believes he can replicate his fine form come next year. Though next season will not be easy for him, considering he will need to defend a lot of points. Regardless of the challenge that lays ahead of him, the Spaniard remains hopeful of being part of the best tennis players.
“I do not think it’s bad, at the end of the day, you try to be at the top, and in order to do it, you need to win many matches; otherwise, your level drops. I will try to keep among the best guys.”
