Serena Williams wins an epic final against Azarenka – 2012 US Open

Somebody defined it “the best womens final ever”, so you can understand it was quite an epic!

Azarenka played a wonderful match. Her tennis was so good that Serena said “I honestly can’t believe I won, I was preparing my runner-up speech because she was playing so great.”

The match was amazing.
Serena trashed Azarenka, Serena’s style, 6-2 in the opener. Then it was time for screaming Vika to go back on business to get a 4-1 lead in the second set. There was a tricky moment when Serena was distracted by a foot fault call in the third game (and you know that Serena gets berserk when judge lines call foot faults). Vika won the 2nd set 6-2 to go to the decider. The third set was a 66 minutes epic. The Belarus had what seemed to be a decisive break to lead 5-3 and go to serve for the match. Time to Serena to fight back again… Serena’s style to incredibly win the next four consecutive games.

From Serena

“I think I competed really well,” Serena said. “I never stopped competing, no matter what, and I think sometimes if you can just go out and compete, then you can continue to do well.”

From Vika

“It’s tough but Serena deserves to win,” said Vika. “She showed what a true champion she is. I’m honoured to stand with such a true champion here. I definitely gave it my all today, stepping out of this court I have no regrets.”

This is the 15th Major single title, then 4th US Open.

Well done Serena!
