Roberta Vinci wins the 2012 Texas Tennis Open

In the ATP tour there are Spaniards that are coming from everywhere, in the ladies circuit it’s about Russians and now also Italians. OK, Italy still has to produce a “real” top player like Sharapova or Kuznetsova, but there are many “2nd layers players” that are finding their way in the rankings.

It all started few years ago with Flavia Pennetta breaking into the top10 and then the hyper-inspiring win of Francesca Schiavone at the 2010 Roland Garros. Now we have the super focussed Sara Errani that just broke into the top10 by winning lots of “minor tournaments” and ups.. also reaching the final at this year Roland Garros.

Now we also have Roberta Vinci that is starting to win single tournaments again. During the last three weeks the Italian “donated” a couple of double bagels (6-0 6-0) to Ana Ivanovic in Cincinnati and to Jovanovsky in the previous match.

The final in Dallas was a 2 hours battle won in straight harsh sets by the Italian. “It was a tough week. We played a really good final. She’s a great player.”

“She played unbelievable. She came up with some really good shots.” commented Jelena Jankovic.

Roberta won her 7th career title and also a good $37.000 check.

This was a good week for the Italian!
