Serena Williams posts cancer plea on Instagram
In a separate video, 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams appeared topless on Instagram to raise awareness about the disease. She covered her breasts while singing the popular hit song “I Touch Myself.” The former world number one said in the post that, though it put her out of her comfort zone, she wanted to remind women to self-check regularly. She emphasized that early detection was the key to beating breast cancer. Williams posted the video as part of the I Touch Myself Project. The project is an initiative to honor former Australian singer Chrissy Amphlett who died in 2013 after battling breast cancer.
WTA Charities will sponsor several events this month. They will begin with the Pretty In Pink Charity Tennis Tournament from 5-6th October. Proceeds from the event go to Women With Purpose, a non-profit organization in the United States. In Asia, the charity body will support the Think Pink tennis and yoga event on 14th October. Proceeds will go to the Hong Kong Breast Foundation. The charity efforts will extend to this year’s WTA Finals in Shenzhen. There will be an “Aceing Cancer” clinic during the event to raise awareness about breast cancer. Special wristbands will also be on sale at the event. Ann Austin, the WTA senior director of Community Development said that the tennis body was happy to be involved in the charity efforts. “The mission of WTA Charities is to promote health and wellness, and we are committed year-round to our goal of improving lives whenever we can make a difference.”
