Andy Murray is back in action after undergoing hip resurfacing surgery earlier this year. The 3-time Grand Slam champion had struggled with a hip injury and even considered retirement. He, however, chose to undergo the special medical procedure and has said that his hip is now pain-free. Murray is back on the court and will be playing at the China Open. He has expressed interest in playing for Britain at the Davis Cup.
Murray will play the Davis Cup if selected
The British player has a busy schedule for the next couple of weeks. The 32-year-old will play in Beijing this week. He has also confirmed his participation at the European Open in Antwerp. The tournament will take place from 13th-20th October. Speaking about his schedule, Murray has said that he will not rush his comeback. After playing in Antwerp, the former world number one has said he could take a break and evaluate his progress. He, however, said that he could accept playing at the Davis Cup if selected. “This year, although I’ve not been playing, it’s been tough. It’s been a full-on year of, like, rehab. I need to make sure I get some breaks in there. My plan now is still to play through Antwerp, and then hopefully, provided I’m selected, play in the Davis Cup.”
It’s nice to see that Nady stays humble and respectful about who decides to play the Davis Cup.
Manage expectations
The 32-year-old won the Davis Cup for Britain in 2015. The finals took place in Antwerp and Murray still has fond memories about the win. David Goffin, Gael Monfils, and Diego Schwartzman will also play at the European Open. Murray has been careful with his comeback and has stated the need to manage expectations. He has participated in selected doubles matches, recently winning the doubles title at the Queens Club Championships with Feliciano Lopez in August. He is positive that he can regain the form that saw him ranked as the best player in the world.
The British player is through to the quarterfinals of the China Open. He defeated countryman Cameron Norrie in five sets to seal the victory in the round of 16. Murray struggled during the match but found his groove to put away the third highest ranked British player. The British player moved well on the court and appeared to have recovered well after playing Matteo Berrettini in the previous round. He is set to face Dominic Thiem on Friday after the Austrian defeated Chinese player Zhang Zhizhen.
