Serena Williams trashes Sharapova to win the gold at the 2012 Olympic Games

That wasn’t a match, that was a complete annihilation. Serena won this gold in style producing one of her finest performance in her entire career. We are not talking about the match with Maria, but about her whole tournament: a truly increadible feast.

SERENA – MARIA 6-0 6-1

These are the strongest players around at the moment and everybody was expecting an epic match, but we had an epic win! Serena was just… Serena to completely dominate the Russian that managed to get on the scoreboard only after 45 minutes at the 10th games. That was a big releif as Maria was 6-0 3-0 in no time and  she could have lost with a very nasty 6-0-6-0 (ok 6-0 6-1 is not nice either…). To tell the truth the combative Russian tried to get back with her immense drive. She was 1 set down (and she didn’t care it was a 6-0) and when she found herself 3-1, she was close to break Serena to get to 3-2 that would have re-opened the match. But Serena disagreed to regroup and win the second set 6-1.

“It’s a big moment,” Williams said. “This compares right up there. I’ve always wanted to win a gold medal, secretly. I always said it doesn’t matter because I already have a gold medal, and I really felt that, but deep, deep, deep, deep down, I wanted it in singles, as well. And I got it! It’s an amazing feeling. I have them all now!”

Not much to say for Maria “Look, she’s playing incredibly confident tennis,” said Sharapova, who has lost eight consecutive matches to Williams. “After winning Wimbledon, you’ve seen her level progress so much here over this tournament. With every match she’s played, she’s playing better, hitting harder, so much power on the ball. Even against the wind today, her shots were very powerful.”

ROAD TO GOLD

Serena’s gold is quite exceptional due to her incredible tournament. It is difficult to conceive a better path. Let’s have a look at the players she defeated in this tournament.

1st  – Jankovic – former world no.1 – 6-3 6-1
2nd – Ursula Radwanska – 6-2 6-3
3rd  – Zvonareva – former world no.1 – 6-1 6-0
qrts – Wozniacki – former world no.1 – 6-0 6-3

semi- Azarenka – world no.1 – 6-1 6-0
final- Sharapova – former world no.1 – 6-0 6-1

You can get bettere than that!

After this tornament the WTA ranking won’t change to remain as follows

1- Azarenka
2- Radwanska
3- Sharapova
4- Serena Williams

But it is clear to everybody who is the strongest at this moment…
