5 GAMES CONCEDED. Shapovalov has an outstanding start of his campaign in Toronto

Denis Shapovalov is the guy to watch in Toronto.

The Canadian teenager wants to have another great run at the Rogers Cup after he surprised anyone last year in Montreal where he reached the semifinal following a couple of incredible wins against the likes of Juan Martin Del Potro and Rafael Nadal.

The first round

Denis was opposed to the world no.46 Jeremy Chardy in the 1st round. The 19-year-old impressed after racing to a 5-0 lead before winning the opener 6-1.

The second set was much more complicated even if Denis had the luxury to get an early break (3-1). In fact, soon after he had to save 4 break points before winning the match 6-1 6-4.

Everything was feeling good. SHAPOVALOV

After the match, Denis couldn’t hide his satisfaction to comment

“Whenever I’m at home, I just seem to loosen up with the crowd. And I just enjoyed myself out there today. It was really fun to be on that center court with so many people watching.

It was one of those matches where everything was kind of feeling good for me. So it’s a really good feeling, and hopefully, it continues.”

Next vs. Fognini

Denis will have a very tough 2nd round when he faces an in-form Fabio Fognini. They have never played each other so far.
