The Wimbledon organization had the brilliant idea to give a seeding to Serena Williams (no.25) and, despite some criticism, the American proved them right.
The former world no.1 reaches the semifinal at the SW19 after edging Camila Giorgi in 3 sets. Serena had to overcome a slow start (2-5) that cost her the first set. However, her experience proved to be too much for Camila, and eventually, she won the encounter 3-6 6-3 6-4 after scoring 17 points more than the Italian (84 vs. 67).
Why Serena is surprised
After the quarters, the American admitted that she didn’t expect to reach the final 4 to comment
“Everything right now is a little bit of a surprise. To be here. To be in the semifinals. I mean, I always say I plan on it, I would like to be there, have these goals. But when it actually happens, it still is, like, ‘Wow, this is really happening.’
This is only my fourth tournament back, so I don’t feel pressure. I don’t feel I have to win this; I don’t feel I have to lose this. I’m just here just to be here and to prove that I’m back. And I feel like I’m back. I still have a long way to go to be where I was.”
Next vs. Goerges
Serena will face Julia Goerges in the semifinal. The head to head is 3-0 for the American that has never dropped a set against the German.
