Simona Halep wins weird opener in Paris

Simona Halep is one of the hottest favorite to win this Roland Garros, but her start wasn’t that convincing, at least the first set.

The seed no.1 was opposed to the world no. 83 Alison Riske and the beginning of the match was awful with Simona losing 5 consecutive games (0-5). Eventually, the Romanian got on the scoreboard in the 6h game, but she couldn’t do much to lose the opener 6-2, Things got completely differently in the following 2 set as Simona conceded just 2 games to win the match after just 94 minutes.

I was nervous. HALEP

Soon after the match, Simona admitted

“I had a slow start because it’s always tough to start this tournament. It’s a pleasure to come here and to play, so always I feel nervous at the beginning.

It was good that I came back so strong. I just didn’t think about the result or about the match. I just wanted to relax my arms, because I was moving pretty well also at the beginning, but my arm was very tight, and I couldn’t hit the ball as I wanted.

Then it was much easier, and I felt really well in the end of the match, and that’s the most important for now.”

Next vs. Townsend

Simona will face the world no.72 Taylor Townsend in the second round. The head to head is 1-0 for the Romanian that is the hot favorite to get to the 3rd round.
