Serena Williams wins the 2012 Bank of the West Classic title – Youtube

Serena is on the roll! After winning her 5th Wimbledon, the American won her 2nd consecutive title in Stanford in straight sets.

The match wasn’t as easy as predicted. World no. 120 Coco Vandeweghe failed to qualify, but as Bojana Jovanovski withdrew with an injury, Coco was admitted to the main draw as a lucky loser. From that moment on the American had a series of incredible wins to find herself in the final.

Serena was expected to trash her opponent, but it wasn’t like that as the world no.4`had quite a sloppy tennis for her standards (tired?). So Serena had 9 aces, 6 double faults and she was quite uneffective to defend (and lose) the only 2 break points she conceded. The 5 times Wimbledon Champion had also to save a set point when she was 4-5 games down on Vandeweghe service game. Then it was game over, with Serena winning the next 4 games ans the final set.

This is Serena’s 43rd title.

Talki.g about the title “I definitely think I survived,” she said. “I don’t think I played my greatest. But I do think I was mentally there, and that helped me out a lot.”

The tournament was considered as a tune up for the London Olympics. “It would mean a lot to me, but I can’t lay all my hopes and dreams on just that,” she said. “But it would mean a lot. I would like to try to get one.”

“There’s happiness that I’m in the final and there’s sadness that I lost,” Vandeweghe said. “I just have to kind of put it on the back burner and move on.”
