Federer (too) easy to the Australian Open quarters

Too easy for Roger Federer in the Australian Open 4th round.

The world no.2 was opposed to the world no.80 Marton Fucsovics, and the only enemy he really had to fight was self-complacency. In fact, Roger was far too good for his opponent to often lose his focus during the match.

Federer had no problems to hold his serve for the entire match while the Hungarian was often struggling. Federer won the first set after breaking Fucsovics only once in the 10th game. Surprisingly, Roger wasn’t able to ever break Marton in the 2nd set to win the set only after winning a relatively comfortable tiebreak. The 3rd set was a walk in the park for the Swiss that broke his opponent twice to play a then it loosely. Eventually, Roger won the match 6-4 7-6 (3) 6-2 in just over 2 hours.

I had to focus on my game. FEDERER

Soon after the match, Roger commented

“He was not completely the unknown opponent that maybe people thought he was.

When you play multiple sets in a short period of time against somebody, you start to understand their strengths and weaknesses a little bit. The goal for me was really trying to be focused on my own game and take it to him and play tough, but he hung with me for a long time, so it was a good match.”

Next vs. Berdych

Roger will play Tomas Berdych for a place in the semifinal. The head to head is 19-6 for Roger that leads “only” 9-5 on hard courts.

Roger defeated Berdych in straight sets at the Australian Open in 2017 (3rd round) and in 2016 (quarters).
