US Open winner Bianca Andreescu made headlines with her victory over 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams. The 19-year-old has performed really well in 2019. After winning her first major title, she is now being celebrated in her country for achieving a feat no other tennis player from Canada had ever accomplished. While Bianca’s parents moved from Romania before she was born, they hope she can still maintain her Romanian heritage.
Born in Canada
Bianca’s parents moved to Canada after completing their college education in Romania. Her father Nicu is a mechanical engineer while her mother works for an investment firm in their adopted country. The couple was living in the country when Bianca was born and she was raised in her hometown of Mississauga. Maria, however, would go back to Romania with her daughter for a brief period as she looked to start a business. After staying in the country for some time, they moved back to Canada and reunited with Nicu.
She knows the language
Bianca’s father Nicu has said that his daughter took up tennis while in Romania and learned to speak the language. He said, “Bianca started tennis in Romania, at 6 years old. The wife moved with Bianca there; we wanted to start a business. Two and a half years she played tennis there. From there, she knows the language; she knows how to write. We speak at home in Romanian, and that helps.” He added that they still visit their extended family which helps Bianca practice the language. “We go home every year, in Valcea, to the family. She has to speak Romanian and that helped her a lot. I hope she will never forget the Romanian language.”
Two fan bases
Fans in Romania have been supporting Bianca and they too celebrated her victory in the US Open. With two fan bases in Canada and Romania, the 19-year-old tennis star is grateful for the support she received during her run in the US Open. She was recently honored in her home town of Mississauga, Canada, where a street was named “Andreescu Way” in her honor. Despite her popularity in Canada, Bianca also made a video thanking the people of Romania for their support. In the video, the smiling Grand Slam champion spoke in Romanian and expressed her gratitude. “Thank you to all the people in Romania. Thank you for supporting me. Not just here at the US Open, but always! Thank you very much!”

Ranked no.4 (career-high), Andreescu played her last match on the 4th of October when she had to bow to Naomi Osaka 5-7 6-3 6-4 in the quarter in Beijing.
