A few month ago, Roger Federer had the dream of regaining the no.1 spot in the rankings. Roger was pretty close to it especially during his run in Montreal where he had to surrender only in the final to a great Sascha Zverev and … his notorious back problem. Eventually, Roger skipped Cincinnati and he crashed out in the US Open quarters while Nadal reached the quarters in Cincinnati before winning the US Open and Beijing. After these results, Rafa is 2,370 ahead of Roger, and this means that the Swiss doesn’t have many chances to end the year as the new world no.1

During the pre-tournament press conference, Roger commented
“When I lost in the US Open I thought to myself it is not realistic that I would end up first in the rankings because I would need to win Shanghai, Basil, Bercy and the Masters, while on top of that you have Rafa playing well and he will get results like he is doing.
The objective for this year is to be fit and I am very happy with the results. From now until the end of the year I will try to win one or more tournaments.”
Federer will start his Shanghai campaign against Diego Schwartzman, the head to head is 3-0 for Roger.
