Everyone was looking forward to seeing if Serena Williams would have been able to conquer the Indian Wells title after 14 years, but that ended pretty soon. The American had to withdraw from the tournament (and also Miami) because she didn’t think she was fit to play. This means that Angelique Kerber will take back the world no.1 spot which doesn’t sound “right” giving the fact that she has a terrible 7-5 win-loss record in 2017.
"Sadly, I have to withdraw from the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells and the Miami Open. I have not been able to train due to my knees and am disappointed I cannot be there. I will keep moving forward and continue to be positive. I look forward to being back as soon as I can."
The draw will be reshuffled as follows
No.3 seed Karolina Pliskova takes Williams' position.
No.5 seed Cibulkova takes Pliskova's position.
No.9 seed Keys takes Cibulkova's position.
No.13 seed Wozniacki takes Keys' position.
No.17 seed Strycova takes Wozniacki's position.
No.25 seed Babos takes Strycova's position.
No.33 seed Kasatkina takes Babos' position, meaning wildcard
