Grigor Dimitrov is having a sort of Australian Open deja-vu in Rotterdam. In fact, the Bulgarian has just defeated Istomin in the round of 16, and he will face Goffin in the quarters. That’s a copy and paste of the Australian Open where he beat Istomin in the round of 16 in 4 sets and then Goffin in straight sets.
The match against Istomin
Grigor had a fantastic start of the match against Denis to break him in the very first game. Then, the Bulgarian had to concede a service game (4-4) to win the opening set only at the breaker after he saved a set point.
In the second set, Denis imploded: he was broken early again, but this time he wasn’t able to recover, and Dimitrov won 7-6 (7) 6-1.
Happy I finished the match in that way. DIMITROV
Grigor ha now a fantastic 16-1 win-loss record. The Bulgarian was extremely happy with his win to comment
“It’s never easy when you have to face that kind of a player indoors. Denis is a great player; I played him in Australia. He started back then unbelievable, so my goal today was to start the match well and work my way through. I’m relieved I could finish the second set that way.”
The quarters vs. Goffin
Grigor will play David Goffin in the quarters. The Bulgarian has a great record against David (3-0), and he has also defeated him twice in the last month without ever conceding a single set. In Melbourne, he beat him 6-3 6-2 6-4 while in the Sofia final he defeated him 7-5 6-4. Talking about Goffin, Grigor commented,
“He’s a tough player, a great competitor. We’ve played a few times, that’s the record, but it doesn’t mean anything to me. I have the same amount of respect for pretty much every player I play, so I never underestimate anyone. He’s been pretty consistent over the past year or so. For sure it’s going to be a great match for us. I just need to stay focused and play my game.”
