The organization of the upcoming ATP500 even in Rotterdam had rather bad news as they lost both the runner-up and a semi-finalist of the last slam. In fact, Rafael Nadal and Stan Wawrinka had to pull out for injury concerns. After their retirements, Cilic will be the top seed.

Nadal

Rafa made the announcement on Facebook to comment

“I am very sorry to announce I won't be able to play in Rotterdam next week. After last year's absence from some tournaments, I started this season well and made a significant effort during the Australian swing. It's because of this that my doctors have strongly advised me to take it easy and give enough rest to my body before competing again to avoid further injuries. I fully understand that the Dutch fans will be disappointed. I am very thankful to Richard for the great support and understanding. #abnamrowtt"

Rafa will play the ATP500 in Acapulco which begins on February 27.

Wawrinka

Stan had to withdraw from the competition because of a knee injury; the same that bothered him during the last Australian Open.  Stan will be replaced by his good friend Benoit Paire.

These retirements also follow the withdrawal of Nick Kyrgios that a few months ago decided instead to play the NBA All-Star Celebrity Game

I`m glad Rafa is taking the advice of his doctors. The amount of tennis he played in Melbourne would be taxing even for someone injury free. Whatever keeps Rafa competitive for the rest of the season makes good sense to me!

Not great to hear that doctors said Rafa to rest. I do not think he has fully fixed his problems with his wrist or whatever
