New season, old story.

The ladies’ tennis in 2017 was dominated by uncertainty with a continuous change at the very top of the rankings. The most grotesque moment of the season was when Serena Williams took back her world no.1 ranking in April after she was out of the circuit for 3 months for pregnancy. Eventually, we had 5 world no.1 in 2017 with Serena Williams, Angelique Kerber, Karolina Pliskova, Garbine Muguruza, and Simona Halep (the reining one).

The Romanian ended the season ranked world no.1, but she is leading Muguruza only by 40points.

This means that if the Spaniard can become the world no.1 if:

1-      She wins the title in Brisbane and Simona doesn’t conquer the title in Shenzhen;

2-      Muguruza wins Brisbane and Halep doesn’t reach the semis in Shenzhen.

And Caroline Wozniacki?

If you thought this uncertainty would have ended in 2018, you can add that if Caroline Wozniacki wins Auckland, Muguruza doesn’t reach the final in Brisbane, and Halep doesn’t reach the quarters in Shenzhen, the Dane will be the new world no.1

Welcome back to 2018!
