If there was any flimsy hope to see Roger Federer playing in Bercy in the years to come, Guy Forget might have destroyed that.

The tournament director of the last ATP1000 of the season had some nasty comments about Federer not playing his tournament following the decision of the Maestro to preserve his body and not to compete soon after a tough (and successful) week in Basel.

Federer weakens the credibility of the circuit. FORGET

The Frenchman released the following comments to L’Equipe

"You imagine my disappointment, my frustration. I had his agent on the phone who told me of his wish to recover because he is at the end of the roll. We take note of it.

We have no other recourse against that. We are sad about all the efforts that have been made for many weeks and many months to welcome Roger and Rafa into this room. Unfortunately, Rafa will be alone. There are other great champions, but I am convinced that Roger's Parisian fans will be very disappointed.

At 36, we pay more attention than when we have 25. Nevertheless, I still think that the Masters 1000 are the nine biggest tournaments of the calendar.

When a player, whoever he is, misses this appointment, it weakens the credibility of the circuit. I greet all those who make the effort. So some are a little diminished.”

It's probably not the right comment for a man (Federer) that has contributed so much to the sport.

This certainly shows very poor judgement on the part of the tournament director. Roger Federer has never given anything but his best and should not be criticized so sharply if this tournament wishes to retain any kind of decent relationship with him. On the other hand, other players are frequently criticized for many reasons without such quick recrimination. I think that sometimes we treat Roger as a God rather than as the great champion among champions that he is.

I understand the disapppointment, but Federer is really trying to hang there as much as he can. Probably more moderate words would have been better

A tournament director that says this kind of stuff about a legend that at 36 keeps on playing and winning like Federer... should be sacked immediately.
