Federer sympathetic with Thiem in his controversy with Serena Williams

Federer maintains that the episode must be the consequence of a misunderstanding

Dominic Thiem and Serena Williams were part of a rather uncharacteristic episode at the French Open a couple of days ago.

In fact, the Austrian was kicked out the main press conference room to make space to Serena Williams that lost her 3rd round match against Sofia Kenin.

Dominic was clearly upset by the episode, and the Social Media wasn’t very nice with Serena that was also probably the victim of what Federer called a “misunderstanding.”

What Federer said

During the press conference following his win against Leonardo Mayer, Roger commented

“I just think it was an unfortunate situation that I thought was funny and we joked about it just before.

That’s why I’m very much aware of what happened, and that’s why we are laughing in the locker room about it now. But in the moment I’m sure I understand his, like, ‘What is going on? It’s a joke’. How he said it, it was great. I love his accent. In German too, by the way, not just in English. And he knows that.”

“I don’t know what went wrong, but something went wrong for this to happen.

I think there is, with all the players, always a way to go that, you know, the one who is still in the tournament gets priority. Anyway, that’s how I see it. Now, there must have surely been a misunderstanding or maybe they should have kept Serena still in the locker room, not waiting here in the press centre.

I don’t know exactly what happened. I understand Dominic’s frustration.

Dominic is about to play the 4th round of against Gael Monfils hoping he will not be kicked out the press conference again after the match.
