Leonardo Mayer beats Florian Mayer for Hamburg title

Leonardo wins the “battles of the Mayers” in Hamburg to win his 2nd career title after defeating Florian and interesting enough, the first one was also in Hamburg (2014).

The Argentine had to come straight from the qualifications before reaching the final. This means that Leonardo had to play 7 matches in 9 days. The Argentine failed to even qualify for the main draw, but he was re-admitted as a lucky loser to beat the seed no.1 Ramos-Vinolas in the first round.

The final against Florian Mayer was decided at the very end. In fact, after exchanging the first 2 sets, the pair was battling on a 3-all scoreline in the decider. Eventually, Leonardo conquered the decisive break in the 8th game (5-3) before winning the match 6-4 4-6 6-3.

It was amazing. MAYER

After winning the trophy, Leonardo commented

“It’s amazing to win in Hamburg again. It’s like home here, and I feel very comfortable. I like the city, and I always play well here.

It’s something special about this sport. I lost in qualifying and then beat the No. 1 seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the first round. It also happened last week in Umag with Rublev. Now I took the opportunity.”
